Ballet

Ballet is a type of performance dance that originated during the Italian Renaissance in the fifteenth century and later developed into a concert dance form in France and Russia. It has since become a widespread, highly technical form of dance with its own vocabulary based on French terminology. It has been globally influential and has defined the foundational techniques used in many other dance genres and cultures. Ballet has been taught in various schools around the world, which have historically incorporated their own cultures and as a result, the art has evolved in several distinct ways.

Musical Theatre

Musical theatre is a form of theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting and dance. The story and emotional content of a musical – humour, pathos, love, anger – are communicated through words, music, movement, and technical aspects of the entertainment as an integrated whole. Although musical theatre overlaps with other theatrical forms like opera and dance, it may be distinguished by the equal importance given to the music as compared with the dialogue, movement, and other elements. Since the early 20th century, musical theatre stage works have generally been called, simply, musicals.

Freestyle

The style has two elements, fast, which involves runs, spins, kicks, and leaps, as well as many other diverse gymnastic like steps and movements with lots of body, arm, and hand actions. The other element is slow; driven from ballet and lyrical, slow allows a dancer to perform and show off dance technique, flexibility and feel of the music.

Tik Tok Dance

TikTok is heading the current dance trends popular among the members of Gen Z as well as millennials. Along with the "Renegade," other notable and famous TikTok dances 2022 have boomed as trending over the app. Dance has become such a fundamental aspect of the app that most of its dances are ubiquitous in today's youth culture.

Commercial

Commercial dance refers to dancing performed in pop artist live shows, music videos and movies. There are many different styles of dance that can be worked into the commercial category, such as hip hop, jazz, locking, popping, breakdancing, krumping, and lots more. It is a versatile genre of dance that is up to date and lots of fun.

Rock & Roll

Rock & Roll is a very athletic, competitive form of partner dance that originated from lindy hop. Unlike lindy hop, however, it is a choreographed dance designed for performance. It is danced by both couples and groups. This is normally an amazingly fast and physically demanding dance. During the development of the musical genre rock and roll, dances to go with the music were also created. From swing, which came into being around 1920, Lindy Hop emerged, the first partner dance ever to feature acrobatic elements. Lindy Hop was modified around 1940 to suit faster music, creating the style known as boogie woogie.

Street Dance

Street dance is a dance style that evolved outside dance studios in any available open space such as streets, dance parties, parks, school yards, raves, and nightclubs. A street dance is a vernacular dance in an urban context. Vernacular dances are often improvisational and social in nature, encouraging interaction and contact with spectators and other dancers. These dances are a part of the vernacular culture of the geographical area that they originated from. For example: Street dance include b-boying (or breakdancing), originated in New York City.

Jazz

Jazz dance is a performance dance technique and style that first emerged in the United States in the early twentieth century. Jazz dance may refer to vernacular jazz or to Broadway or theatrical jazz. The term 'jazz dance' has been used in ways that have little or nothing to do with jazz music. Since the 1940s, Hollywood movies and Broadway shows have used the term to describe the choreographies of Bob Fosse and Jerome Robbins. In the 1990s, colleges and universities applied to the term to classes offered by physical education departments in which students dance to various forms of pop music, rarely jazz.

Ballroom

Ballroom dance is a type of partner dance originating at the end of the sixteenth century in France. Commonly used as shorthand for any partner dance, ballroom has today evolved into two main subgenres – standard/smooth and Latin/rhythm. Dances within these categories include the waltz, tango and foxtrot, and pasodoble to name a few. Ballroom is a popular form of competitive dance, or dance sport, with competitions being held all over the world.

Contemporary

Developed during the mid-twentieth century, contemporary dance is now one of the most popular and technical forms of dance studied and performed professionally, especially in the US and Europe. Drawing on classical, modern and jazz dance styles, contemporary dance has evolved to incorporate many characteristics of a broader range of dance forms. Known for its emphasis on strong torso and legwork, contract and release, fall and recovery and floor work, it is often known for unpredictable and disordered changes in speed and rhythm throughout a performance.

Hip-Hop

Hip-hop dancing refers to a range of street dances that developed in relation to hip hop music and culture. Hip-hop dancing dates to the early 1970s in New York and California, evolving out of Funk and the development of break beat. Main styles of hip-hop dancing include Breaking, Locking and Popping, with derivative styles emerging out of these including Memphis Jookin’, Turfing, Jerkin’ and Krumping. These were often popularised and made mainstream after being featured in music videos of the time.

Modern Dance

Considered as being a broad genre of dance, modern dance primarily arose from western countries such as the USA and Germany during the late 1900s. While most forms of dance are structured and feature set steps, the purpose of modern dance is to rely on the dancer’s interpretation of the music and feeling to guide movements. Modern dance was initially born out of dislike for the limitations of traditional dances such as ballet, which often oppressed dancers with rigid rules and techniques. Currently, modern dance is enjoyed across the world with participants having the ability to practice ballet dancing without having to place strict focus on their techniques or turnout. Instead, dancers can choose a piece of music and use unconventional movements to convey emotions or to tell a meaningful story

Acro Dance

Acro dance is a style of dance that combines classical dance technique with precision acrobatic elements. It is defined by its athletic character, its unique choreography, which seamlessly blends dance and acrobatics, and its use of acrobatics in a dance context. It is a popular dance style in amateur competitive dance as well as in professional dance theatre and in contemporary circus productions such as those by Cirque du Soleil.

Latin Dance

Latin Dance is a partnered dance style that is united by its place of origin- Latin America. This type of dance is invariably passionate and rhythmic while performing. Latin dances hail from various countries in North and South America and has European, and African influences. Latin Dance is known for passion, the fire, and the energy and encompases many forms such as Salsa, Mambo, Merengue, Rumba, Cha Cha Cha, Bachata, and Samba.
